My experience at the Loyola Literacy Center has been very positive, and I found that I was learning from my tutors as much as they were learning from me.
Being an ESL tutor for immigrants showed me how hard people are willing to work in order to achieve their goals and dreams that brought them here. The people that I met at the Literacy Center did more for me than I expected; their drive, persistence, and dedication was awe-inspiring. Hearing about where the learners that I worked with came from and their negative experiences back home, yet seeing their constant efforts at learning English was amazing. It reminded me of my family's hard work and dedication to learning English when they came here.
Something that became more apparent to me through my tutoring experience was how important language is in communication and expressing yourself. It seems silly, but you don't realize the true value of language when you use it every day. Seeing my learners struggle to express themselves in English was really eye-opening for me; it showed me how lucky I am to be fluent in the lingua franca that is English. Although I was once an ESL student, I was young, so learning English was relatively easier than it is for the adult learners that I worked with.
Tutoring at the Literacy Center solidified my desire to eventually pursue academia in my respective field. It showed me how gratifying and rewarding helping others learn is, as well as how much of a difference teaching makes in someone's life.
My experience at the Literacy Center was life-changing and it's something that I am truly grateful for. When I saw the flyer "advertising" the Literacy Center, I didn't think that being a tutor there would change me as much as it did. I am thankful for what I've learned from my learners and how much I've learned about myself.
